Why do people say new braunfels

With the help of your donations we have been making good progress on designing and launching our new website! I have noticed recently that some people call the central Texas city of New Braunfels ''New Braunsfels'' with an extra s after the 'braun' syllable.

I'm bewildered by this pronunciation. These same people have no problem with words such as ''conference'' or ''infer. Most people are probably just as familiar with the word 'brawn,' so that doesn't seem likely.
