DVI is good to around 5m at x, as 15m at x1k. VGA is good for around 40m, so I think you have 2 choices. It sounds like the DDC isn't working reliably. It's not part of the original VGA spec, so what works for displaying an image many not work for the computer querying the device's capabilities; thus boosters etc. Since it uses different pins from the image signal it could be a loose connection. What brand projector? Is pin 9 unconnected on the longer cable but connected on the shorter one?
