This is just a curious study to see how long each black belt will take to achieve. Students and teachers are honored with belts and ranks for being dedicated and disciplined to their respective art.

Black Belts are given after passing a test which students can fail. In judo, achieving the first dan in black belt is just the beginning of becoming a serious judo athlete, and within the world of judo does not signify that the student is an expert. Training Judo three days a week can speed up this time tremendously. In any case, most people that practice Aikido diligently several times a week may attain the first level black belt in 4 to 5 years.

Of course, this depends on their level of diligence and commitment to the practice. Aikido is different than most Martial Arts, your instructor must feel that you will be a good representative of the school.

It varies from person to person, however you can expect around 4 to 5 years maybe a year more or less in order to obtain your black belt in Aikido.

The length of time it takes to earn a black belt in Karate ultimately depends on the dedication of the student and the standards of the martial arts school issuing the black belt.

With respect to physical skills, students must generally display the required level of proficiency in karate basics, form and sparring ability. The candidate must also demonstrate required forms and self-defense techniques. There is no firm timetable for achieving a black belt.

The Karate Institute of America, for example, requires students to be in continuous training for at least three years before they can take the first degree black belt examination. Students must also be at least 16 years old and must have finished among the top three at five tournaments since their previous brown belt test. A practitioner wearing a black belt has the responsibility to pass on knowledge, encouragement and experience to willing students.

The journey toward earning a black belt is a long one. A student will train for years to perfect physical techniques while developing inner strengths, such as courage, focus and discipline. A white belt represents the open mindedness a student must possess in order to accept teachings from the master.

Upon showing faith and trust in the teacher, the student progresses to a yellow belt, which represents a seed. The practitioner with a yellow belt grows to develop quality skills. A green belt indicates growth, while the student with a blue belt displays maturity.

The practitioner with a blue belt becomes strong mentally and physically and progresses to the red belt. A red belt represents the brightness of the sun and the ability to overcome disappointments and setbacks. There is the development of an aura of goodness, vitality, and patience.

Earning a black belt is preceded by progressing through the ranks of several belts, many but not all of which have been mentioned. Every martial art requires a different length of time to achieve the coveted black belt. Some disciplines require ten years of training, while others only three. Of course, this varies based on time commitment and skill requirements.

Yu Martial Arts, we teach a repertoire of skills that require mastery and application prior to testing, but, on the average, our students can achieve their BlackBelt after 4 years of consistent study and practice. A martial artist who trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu undergoes rigorous study.
